Newcastle’s trees at your fingertips: Explore with EzyPortal
Two years on, Newcastle City Council’s EzyPortal continues to give residents a unique way to explore the city’s trees. From bustling streets to tranquil parks, the portal brings the urban canopy to life, making it easy to see, learn about, and connect with Newcastle’s green spaces.
A city committed to its trees
Newcastle has long been a leader in urban forestry. The council has been recognised internationally as a Tree City of the World, reflecting its strong approach to planting, maintaining, and protecting trees. With over 628,000 trees across the city, community initiatives like youth orchards and local planting projects continue to grow and safeguard Newcastle’s canopy.
The Community Tree Portal features an interactive map where residents can locate trees in their area, along with detailed information including species, dimensions, photos, inspection records, and maintenance history. Community Portal has multiple layers, including current trees, trees identified for removal and potential tree planting locations.

The platform also integrates carbon sequestration and storage assessments, allowing residents to view the Ecological Benefits provided by their local trees and their estimated value. Taken together, the council’s trees store over 1,95 million tonnes of Carbon and continue to remove close to 19 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere each year.
The Protected Tree Portal provides access to Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) and trees in conservation areas. Users can check which trees are protected, see those under Section 115 consultation, and understand how tree management decisions are made. The portal brings transparency to planning and tree protection, helping residents and professionals alike.

Community engagement in action: Another helpful feature is the ability for residents to submit tree enquiries. Using the map, they can indicate exactly which tree they wish to report, which helps the council identify and respond to the matter in a timely way. Since its launch in March 2024, Since its introduction in 2024, they received over 3,700 unique visits with more than 1,200 enquiries submitted through the portal.
Powered by Ezytreev
This achievement was made possible through close partnership between the Council and Ezytreev’s specialists, who worked together to adapt, configure and further develop the EzyPortal.
For many years, the council has relied on Ezytreev to manage its tree inventory, inspections, and maintenance schedules. This expertise underpins ezyPortal, ensuring residents see accurate, up-to-date information, directly from the city’s tree management system. Drawing directly on Ezytreev’s live tree data, the portal publishes comprehensive and reliable information, making detailed information readily accessible to all.
Thanks to Newcastle City Council’s innovative approach, residents can explore the city’s trees like never before. Two years on, EzyPortal remains a vital tool for transparency, environmental stewardship, and community engagement — showing how technology and care for the urban canopy go hand in hand.
